A BEVY of beautiful and talented women from across the city turned out for the semi-finals of the Miss York 2012 competition.

The event, staged at the Biltmore bar, in Swinegate, York, yesterday, saw 50 girls battling it out for a coveted place in the finals of this year’s contest.

The candidates were interviewed by an X Factor-style panel of judges about their jobs/studies, personal and professional ambitions, hobbies, talents and views on various subjects and gave reasons for wanting to represent the city.

Miss York organiser Naomi Smith, a former winner of the York contest herself, said the standard of the competitors was once again extremely high.

Naomi said she wanted to quash the stereotype that such contests were for girls with nothing more to give than their looks, saying: “We want somebody who can be a good role model for women across the city.

The final will take place on May 19 at York’s Barbican as part of a fashion-show style event.

The winner will represent York in the Miss England 2012 pageant, to be held in London.
