AN MP says he has been left “staggered” after being told the installation of two signs directing motorists towards a North Yorkshire town’s tourist attractions will cost at least £36,000.
Julian Smith, who represents Skipton and Ripon, has campaigned for the brown signs indicating the route to Masham to be placed next to the A1, saying it is vital for businesses to be able to draw in visitors.
The Highways Agency has said the signs will cost at least £36,000 – only weeks after originally claiming the bill could be as high as £187,000.
Mr Smith said: “I am very disappointed at the lack of appreciation of the devastating economic impact not having enough signage is having on Masham.”
