It does Lorrraine Eadie little credit to attempt to make political capital from the demise of her child’s school (Labour “has gone back on pledge”, March 2).

Demographics are not in the purview or control of any political party, and indeed when the school was last saved from closure the community was clearly told to use it or lose it. The current situation raises two possibilities in that respect; either insufficient parents have chosen to send their children there, or there are insufficient children in the catchment area.

Either way, it is simple maths, not political manipulation, which is now more than likely about to cause the demise of this excellent facility.

Ms Eadie has, as do the rest of us, choices.

She could attempt an accelerated rate of procreation in an attempt to provide classroom fodder for Burnholme. She could raise more funds by hosting cheese and wine evenings. She could do as I, and I hope many others have done: complete the online consultation document with her suggestions for saving Burnholme.

She could, as I hope to do, explore with the headmaster what she can offer to help this desperate situation. Or she could quite simply fill the funding gap herself to the tune of some half a million pounds PA.
