EVEN though neither I nor my family have any direct connection with York’s Rowntree/Nestle factory, every time I pass the Rowntree War Memorial, outside the factory, I do wonder who was responsible for the choice of materials.

From almost the beginning of its existence, it has been permanently damp and very discoloured, looking as if it has been there for many years and badly neglected.

Surely anyone “in the know” should be aware of what was the most suitable type of material for such a memorial.

Whoever made the choice, made a really bad one.

To me, the whole appearance is an insult to the memory of the people listed on it.

It is such a pity that this memorial which, I am sure, would cost a lot of money to erect, looks in such a sorry state.

Does anyone else think the same?
