I write regarding Archbishop of York John Sentamu and his views on cheap labour (“Workfare” scheme slammed by Sentamu, February 27).
I feel Dr Sentamu is totally wrong regarding young people gaining experience without pay.
They may get a job at the end of it and it will look good on their CV that they have worked.
We have many volunteers, older and young; if all were paid they would not have that chance.
The young people are experiencing discipline, something to get up for in the morning, learning teamwork.
Years ago, when we had teenagers potato picking, the local village children had their first taste of work – not now. The same with Saturday and holiday jobs, now gone too.
We cannot condone eastern sweat shops and factories, but sadly they exist and those people are able to eat and feed their families.
Has anyone asked those taking part in the scheme what they think?
