As part of York800 celebrations, hundreds of choir singers in the city will be coming together to form a huge community choir called Ebor Vox.

Performances will include a new piece specially composed for York800 by acclaimed composer Benjamin Till, creator of the BBC’s 2010 Symphony for Yorkshire.

Residents will also get the chance to be a part of the Charter weekend when one lucky competition winner’s poem will be shortlisted and selected by a panel to be used by Benjamin Till to create the Ebor Vox composition.

Performances will take place along the River Ouse, as part of the flotilla of hundreds of boats on Saturday 7 July, and at the Eye of York on the evening of Monday 9 July. In addition, choirs will spring up in shops, cafes and streets over the Charter Weekend.

To launch Ebor Vox, the council is hosting a competition asking local people to write short poems of no more than 400 words, which centre on the question: “What is special about York?”

Entries can by sent by email to york800@york.gov.uk or by post to York 800, c/o Arts & Culture, 18 Back Swinegate, York, YO1 8ZD. Closing date in March 5.
