I SHARE Stuart Wilson’s concerns about our city being spoilt (Soapbox, February 11). But I cannot agree that the Peasholme Green building is the ugliest in York.
Walk a few yards towards the city centre and you will see ‘Concretebow’. Some months ago, I had a letter published moaning about the removal of the beautiful mahonia shrubs on the corner with Whip-ma-Whop-ma-Gate and my ‘Concretebow’ remark was edited to Stonebow.
I have a confession: every time I queue for a bus I cringe with guilt and shame. As a junior surveyor in the city, keen to earn brownie points, I introduced a bloated entrepreneur from London to the site.
Do you remember when Petergate looked like Shambles? Loud protests and strong public opinion saved Gillygate from compulsory purchase and development.
Look at Mulberry Hall for sympathetic modernisation development.
To those bureaucrats trusted with responsibility: stop ruining our city, hailed as one of the finest in Britain, a country regarded as one of the world’s most desirable.
