FLYING starts were made by York Indoor Bowls Club and hosts New Earswick IBC in the Yorkshire Double Rinks Championship.

York collected a maximum six points from their first game against Redcar, winning 37-13, and New Earswick five points from their 24-21 victory against Thornaby.

The two met in the second game and York proved to be too strong as they again picked up the maximum from a 30-17 aggregate win.

Dave Attwood followed up his 15-7 success in his first match by beating Barry Johnson, who had stepped in for Bill Waldie, 14-8.

Waldie had earlier picked up a two on the last end to win 13-10 against Thornaby.

Paul Humphreys, who won his first game by a massive 22-6 margin, scored a six on the last end to beat Brian Gray 16-9. Gray had earlier unluckily drawn 11-11 after losing the last three ends of his game.

In section ‘B’, Harrogate were the surprise team. After seeing off Huddersfield in their first game, they took two points off group favourites Featherstone, only losing 27-21 York needed just one point from their final game against Thornaby to make the final – but they collected a third maximum with Humphreys winning 14-5 and Attwood 10-7.

New Earswick also finished in style to take the group runners up spot by beating Redcar 25-19.

Barry Johnson’s rink took the last four ends to triumph 16-8, but Brian Gray’s team could only pick up a single on the last end for an 11-9 loss.

Featherstone just clinched group ‘B’ top spot with a 25-23 victory over second-placed Huddersfield, who pipped Harrogate on a shots difference of two.

Humphreys’ team got off to a great start in the final, leading Mark Hughes 9-1 after only five ends while Attwood’s team trailed 7-2.

But from 13-8 down Attwood took the last three ends to win, while Humphreys’ rink lost 14-10 – giving the title to Featherstone by 27-24.
