IN-FORM City of York ladies I beat Leeds University – and the weather – to go top of North Hockey League division one.

With all but two of the weekend’s fixtures wiped out by the freezing conditions, York took full advantage with a 1-0 away win to leapfrog Wakefield II and Longridge 1.

York won an early penalty corner, but Laura Horne was unable to direct it goalwards.

Leeds applied some pressure, but York’s defence showed a lot of discipline and calmness to break down the hosts’ attacks.

The best opportunity for Leeds came midway through the first half, but York ’keeper Dawn Hopkins made an excellent diving save to deflect the ball wide when it was heading for the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

Despite Leeds’ pressure, York found the match-winning goal when Ali Butler fired the ball into the ‘D’, Kirsty Rossington passed it on and Nikki Gill squeezed it past the ’keeper.

The majority of games in the women’s section of the Yorkshire League were postponed, along with every scheduled fixture in the men’s divisions of the North League.

Relegation-threatened City of York men’s III were beaten 6-2 at home by Harrogate II in Yorkshire League division one. Dave Rogers and Peter Fitton scored for York.

All the club’s other Yorkshire League fixtures were postponed.
