FIRE chiefs have launched a trial of sprinkler systems in the homes of vulnerable people in East Yorkshire and Humberside.

The systems will be fitted in the properties of some elderly and disabled people who have been identified as being unable to escape if a fire breaks out.

The initiative is part of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service’s target of eliminating domestic fire deaths, after six people were killed in house fires last year.

The sprinklers will be installed in ten homes at an average cost of £2,000 each, in a partnership between the service and the region’s health trusts and councils.

Daryl Oprey, the fire service’s head of safety, said: “These measures help give us more time to get there, or give residents more time to survive while we get there.”
