THE parent of a 16-year-old girl from York who skipped school 118 times has been prosecuted.

York magistrates heard the pupil had an absence rate of about 80 per cent after her attendance record over 146 occasions she should have been at lessons was monitored.

Her parent was given a 12-month conditional discharge after admitting failing to ensure the child’s attendance at school and was given a 12-month conditional discharge with £258 court costs.

Mark Smith, City of York Council’s schools adviser, said: “The council only uses the courts as a last resort where attempts to encourage good attendance have failed, but our priority is to protect the interests of the children. The child had poor attendance records going back some years.”
