SMOKING used to be part of our culture. Offices across the land were smoky and fug-filled. Even in hospital, patients could sit in bed puffing away.
No longer. Smoking is banned in the workplace, and banned at York Hospital. And from December, that ban will be extended to the hospital's grounds as well. Patients will no longer be able to sneak out to the car park for a quick cigarette.
Some will complain. But for the sake of clean air and healthy lungs, this is to be welcomed.
