York MP queries call to cut fuel duty

A YORK MP has criticised calls from the Countryside Alliance and fellow MPs to cut or postpone fuel duty.

Hugh Bayley, MP for York Central, said it was inappropriate to call for fuel duty cuts without suggesting where the lost funds could be made up.

He said: “Anyone who proposes a cut in fuel duty in the current climate must explain where the shortfall is going to come from.

“The Government has already increased VAT to 20 per cent and ruled out increases to business tax, Income Tax and National Insurance, so the Chancellor doesn’t have much room for manoeuvre.”

Yesterday, Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, and Julian Sturdy, MP for York Outer, told The Press they backed calls from the CA to postpone or cut fuel duty, after it was found residents in rural areas of North Yorkshire including Selby and Hambleton had the highest fuel costs in the region.

Fuel certainly does cost a lot and it's an easy shout fot a politician to cut fuel costs (or any other taxes...or anything for that matter!...). But it is entirely reasonable for people to question where the funding will come from. I doubt many 'Countryside Alliance' supporters are driving fuel efficient cars (quite the opposite- most countryside alliance stickers I see are in Barbour Green 4WD gas guzzlers)...so is this really a priority? It's possible for many people to slash their fuel costs by driving a smaller vehicle more gently and by avoiding uneccessary journies. Even the buses could reduce fuel costs by having them driven a bit more gently...

Hugh Bayley is about as useful as a chocolate teapot! In his election propaganda he said he would spend more time in york at the weekend - he has not! Time for him to be de-selected and for us to have a younger more in touch MP go away Hugh you are useless!

Hugh Bayley - out of touch with York -definitely! But what makes you think a 'younger' MP would be 'more in touch' than an older one?

I had to read the article twice to confirm it was Hugh Bayley saying this and someone from the looney coilition. Does Mr Bayley, whose party is trying to promote growth, reduce unemployment and keep Britain working understand how higher fuel prices are causing such distress putting transport cost up. The things we buy in the shops and the cost of public transport are all affected by the cost of fuel.

It has nothing to do with whether you live in the country or drive a 4X4. We will all suffer if the rises go ahead.

Fuel price equality with city prices would help! Pocklington's cheapest fuel is always 2-3p per litre more than town prices and at Dunnington and Gate Helmsley even more. How can the rural petrol stations justify this, even before the proposed fuel duty cut?

I agree with bjb . Mr Bayley ( of cycling expenses fame ) is completely out of touch with the real world. We could save a whole lot of money by getting rid of him and half of City of York Councillors . Leeds and Sheffield have nearly half the number of councillors per head of population that York has. This begs the question why does york need nearly twice the number of councillors that these other great cities manage with ? The private sector has had to get rid of all the dead wood; I think it's time that York had a bonfire !

Good for him. The Countryside Alliance is full of brain-dead Tories who wouldn't know a sensible policy if it chased them down a rabbit hole using a pack of hounds.

I couldn't agree more re the chocolate teapot comment.

Watch out though, as Bayleaf's deselection would make way for Clown Prince, James Alexander to assume he has the right to take over.... better the devil you know????

It's quite amusing for him to question where the money will come from, seeing as Labour never seemed to ask themselves this the whole time they were in government - hence we're in so much debt now!!

How is this one for a start? How about a cut in Map’s salaries?
The current level of annual salary for an MP is £65738 plus expenses, relocation and end of term expenses to help integrate them back into society.

I think £40,000 per year and no living expenses paid apart from travel to/from the House of Commons only from their home address is more than generous (It may actually get rid of the career politician and give us real people elected as our representatives).

There are 646 seats in the House of Commons with a reduction of £25738 per annum per seat gives a saving of £16,624,810.00 plus the high related savings to their pension fund.

Never mind the savings to be made in the House of Lords on their high ‘allowances’.

Now that’s an example of the big society at work that i sugest they will not want to hear!

Nothing, of course, to do with a worldwide economic crisis that appears (unless I'm mistaken) to be affecting countries across the globe, of all political persuasions. You can repeat it a 1000 times but only the daft would believe it was actually the fault of any individual government.

Why would he want to spend weekends here? His wife hates the place.
