AS a regular reader of your paper I often have a grumble about what I read.

In Thursday's paper, regarding mobile phones, the police said they were catching six drivers every day illegally using them. If I stand outside my door I bet I can catch six in an hour.

What gets me is the fines: £30. It would hardly fund the paperwork, alone teach them a lesson.

If they started to fine them, say, £500, I wonder how many they would catch. Not many, I bet.

Last week I read an article about traffic lights, well I think the council has overdone it in many places.

Near my house the council has spent about £250,000 on new lights. I see motorists racing to catch the lights before they change, which sometimes causes problems.

I think it would have been much safer had there been a mini-roundabout, with zebra crossings on each road.

If fact, there are many areas in York where it would be better to have roundabouts than lights. They are self-regulating; the side with the most traffic gets priority.

I'm sure it would help if we used the York inner ring road as a one-way system. You could almost do away with most of the lights, with traffic filtering in as normal.

Someone was on the radio the other day about the high number of cars which did not have insurance. When you read the court fines in The Press, it is no wonder. They only seem to get fined about £150; it seems they are in pocket about £400 to £500.

Why don't courts work out how much it would have cost the offenders and fine them based on that? There. I've had my grumble. I feel much better.
