YORK City's new coach Colin Walker is still one of New Zealand's top ten all-time record goalscorers.

Walker netted 18 times in 34 appearances for the Kiwis after being granted citizenship while playing his club football there in the 1980s.

The highlight of his international career included a game against a young Brazil team during which he was marked by future star Aldair.

He also won New Zealand's Golden Boot during three of his five seasons on the Antipodean island and was the country's Player of the Year once.

Prior to his success in Australasian football, Rotherham-born Walker enjoyed a promising career in his native country.

After a brief trial with the Minstermen, he joined Barnsley and plundered 13 goals in 18 matches during his first season.

The highlight of his Oakwell career was holding the mighty Liverpool to a 0-0 League Cup quarter-final draw at Anfield before scoring past Bruce Grobbelaar in the replay.

Liverpool went on to win 3-1 and Walker was later given a free transfer.

He also played for Sheffield Wednesday, where he scored a 12-minute hat-trick on his debut after coming on as a second-half substitute, and Doncaster Rovers, where he averaged a goal every other game, as well as Cambridge United, Darlington and Torquay United.

Walker said: "I was lucky enough to play against some great teams and players and nobody can take those moments away from me.

"Now, I want to help York's players fulfil their potential."
