EIGHT goals from six scorers put Copmanthorpe Under-14s on the road to another big season in the British Sugar Minor League Trophy.

Copmanthorpe beat Poppleton 80 in the first round of the League Trophy to book a home tie against Brooklyn - 8-1 winners at Dunnington - in round two on October 7.

New midfielder Harvey Fenny got the first and last goals and skipper Oliver Bird also added one in each half to up the score.

Noel Harrison got the goal of the day - a belter from a short corner after a one-two with Bird. Oliver Shimmin, with acrobatic celebration to match, Alex Green and an own goal rounded off the scoresheet.

The opening league game of the season had seen Thorpe United retain their billing as the ones to beat as they beat Copmanthorpe 51 at home. Last season, Thorpe took the league and both cups, knocking Copmanthorpe out en route at the semi-final stage of the league trophy and bettering them in the final of the FA cup.

United's charge towards a repeat season continued with an easy 7-0 defeat of Stamford Bridge in the first round and they now face a trip to Easingwold Town 'A' at the next stage.

Wigginton Grasshoppers U15s had the closest call of the opening round after squeaking past Ulleskelf on penalties.

The teams were deadlocked at 22 after extra time and the visiting Grasshoppers only made it through to the next round after an agonising penalty shoot-out ended 5-4 in their favour.

Pickering Town U13s edged past Strensall Tigers 2-1 in one of the few close encounters of the day, with their U14 'B' team ousting Pocklington Town by the same margin.

In the U15s, Tadcaster Albion sneaked into the second round by a single goal to face Rawcliffe at home after toppling Copmanthorpe 3-2.
