A WINDFALL of £90,000 will be used by the council to make safety and access improvements near schools in the Heslington area.

City of York Council said it will use the cash, from national transport charity Sustrans, to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists at road crossings, junctions and side roads on the route to Fulford Secondary School and St Oswalds CE Primary.

Works will also be carried out to improve the safety of crossings on Heslington Lane near its junction with Broadway.

Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for City Strategy at the council, said: “This scheme provides an important missing link in the local cycle network between Heslington and Fulford and the Millennium bridge and beyond.

“If we’re to tackle congestion problems in the city we need to develop complete alternative routes for safe cycling – and providing an off road link here on what is a rather narrow and relatively high speed bit of road is a big step forward.” The council said while the Sustrans grant will only cover part of the improvements, the shortfall will be met by it own capital budget for this financial year.
