A YORK woman whose great-grandfather fought in the Battle of the Somme is walking more 22 miles along the First World War battle lines for charity.

Rochelle Sharpe, of Osbaldwick, will take part in the “Wenches In The Trenches” walk alongside other Army wives to raise money for ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity.

Rochelle, 38, who met her husband WO2 Andrew Sharpe, also 38, in Market Weighton, is currently based in Germany with her husband and their son, Kaelan.

She said: “My husband has just returned from Afghanistan. Andy is our hero and I thought I want to raise money for such a good charity. You don’t know when you will need help and it has helped a few people I know. The challenge is going to be quite hard work but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Rochelle will be following in the foorsteps of her great-grandfather Peter Toal, who survived the Somme despite being injured by gunfire.
