YORK-based charity SNAPPY received two awards at the Duke of York’s Community Initiative annual awards ceremony.

SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York) was awarded the Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award in recognition of volunteers’ hard work to offer activities and projects, such as swimming, drama and arts, to youngsters with special needs aged between five and 25 in the community.

Service manager Anne Stamp also received the Individual Leadership Award for her contribution over the last 17 years and was awarded her certificate by Prince Andrew at the Harrogate Army Apprentice College.

Anne, 56, said: “When I got involved I thought I’d only do it for a year but 17 years down the line I’m still here. I love being with the children and we all work so hard to get money for new schemes for them.”

Anne faced a dilemma on the morning of the presentation, however, as granddaughter Molly was born just as she was leaving for Harrogate.

“I got the call from my son-in-law saying my granddaughter had been born and I didn’t know what to do. I was torn,” said Anne. “But I went to collect my award and then rushed over to visit after. It was lovely to receive the award and we all had a nice lunch and got to meet the Duke of York.”
