THE mother of a cyclist who was severely injured in a collision with a York bus says he appears to be making an incredible recovery – thanks to “brilliant” hospital staff.

Carol Beard said she feared her 26-year-old son, Kurt O’Sullivan, of Jute Road, Acomb, would die after the accident last Friday night, in which he suffered serious head injuries.

She said he was on a life support machine in intensive care after being transferred from York Hospital to a specialist unit for head injuries at Hull Royal Infirmary.

“It was awful,” she said. “I thought he would die.”

But she said he had subsequently been transferred to high dependency, and was speaking again, although he could remember nothing of the accident.

“I can’t believe it. It’s a miracle. The staff have been brilliant, at both Hull and York Hospital.”

She also praised police, who she said took her to hospital last Friday to see her son, a former Oaklands School pupil.

Miss Beard said medics had stressed that Kurt was not “out of the woods” as yet, and could still suffer a setback.

“But they’re really pleased with his progress.”

She hoped the news of her son’s progress would be passed on to the driver of the bus, who she said was not to blame for the collision.

She said members of her family had been rallying round since the accident.

The Press reported on Monday how the collision, which involved First’s Number 4 bus from the University of York to Acomb, happened in Wetherby Road near Acomb Green. The road was closed by police for several hours afterwards.

First said it would be both assisting police with their inquiries and also conducting its own thorough internal investigation.”
