OVER the years, I have seen many letters and comments suggesting the use of the River Ouse as a transport route.

Anyone looking at a map of York would see that the Ouse makes a junction with the circular ring road to the north and south (approximately) and runs uncongested through the heart of the city.

At either junction of the Ouse/ring road city of York council built a Park&Ride; surely with some engineering this could be extended to Park&Sail?

In the past such a scheme would have been rejected on cost. However, with a fresh round of quantitative easing coming along and every economist saying this money needs to be put into infrastructure schemes that create jobs, surely now is the time to ask the Government for such funds.

The spin-off from providing regular water buses/taxis would be to open up development on both banks, cut congestion, encourage out-of-town parking, provide a boost to city-centre businesses and no doubt be a tourist attraction in its own right.

I appreciate that the Ouse is prone to flooding and that on some days its use would be impractical, but such infrastructure as needs to be built could be done with a minimum of disruption.
