Updated: A YORK hotel was evacuated at the weekend after a fire was started by sun refracting from a mirror.

Firefighters were called to York Pavilion Hotel in Main Street, Fulford, after the fire started in a first-floor bedroom early on Saturday afternoon.

The fire, which was caused by “radiated heat from the sun shining on a mirror in the bedroom”, caused ten per cent fire damage to the room and 75 per cent smoke damage, a fire service spokesman said.

No one was injured by the fire and everyone was evacuated from the building.

Crews used breathing apparatus, two hoses and a thermal imaging camera.
