THIS is the first glimpse of two locomotives side by side in a rare photo opportunity at York’s National Railway Museum.
The museum has put two of its most popular exhibits next to each other for the first time ever and until October 21, Mallard and Duchess of Hamilton will be displayed side by side with their noses pointing to the turntable for visitors to take photographs.
Steve Davies, director of the museum, said: “Our visitors have been asking for the engines to be displayed in this way since Duchess of Hamilton was re-streamlined in 2009, so I’m thrilled to be able to give them this fantastic opportunity.”
The engines will be replaced by London and South Western Railway T3 class 4-4-0 No. 563, which is returning from Canada after appearing in The Railway Children. Mallard was due to travel to Germany later this year but, after the exhibition’s cancellation, will remain indefinitely at the museum.
