Hat-trick man Oliver Radford scored his first tries for Heworth ARLC Under-17s as they extended their great start to the season with a deserved 42-6 victory over Hull Isberg.

Hull came with a big pack but the Black and Whites, barring unforced errors which could have been costly, more than matched them.

Alex Clough, who made a number of breaks from full-back, opened the scoring for the York side, the impressive Harry Deighton adding the first of four conversions.

Heworth tried at every opportunity to get the ball wide, helping Fraser West score twice, while David Hayes, Jack Rowson and Danny Simpson also crossed.

Radford was named man of the match but many other shone in a fine team show, with Jason Smith outstanding in defence, twins Michael and Conner Hind standing out, William Barratt taking the ball forward like a tank, and Liam Jackson, Oliver Franks and Ross Hunter bringing immense enthusiasm.

York Acorn U16s saw off hosts Sheffield Hillsborough 52-0 in the first round of the BARLA National Cup.

Acorn forced an error from the kick-off, which was seized on by Zach Agnew, who scooted in for the opener, which was followed by tries by Ash Robson, Dave Larkin, Tom Burdett, Luke Swales and man-of-the-match Tom Gurden for a 34-0 half-time lead.

Good work by debutant Adam Wilson paved the way for hooker Lewis Lord to score, slick handling gave Joe Stuart enough space to squeeze in, and Lord and Gurden added solo efforts.

Robson, the pick of the backs with Harry Bromwich, kicked six goals.

High-flying Heworth U15s only had 12 men but scored a late converted try to beat Dewsbury Moor 16-14 in a fine match.

Heworth led 10-6 at half-time thanks to two well-taken tries by Billy Sturdy and a conversion by Jonny Rawsthorne. Moor hit back after sustained pressure before half-time and pinned Heworth back for 15 minutes after the interval, the man advantage finally telling with a converted try, followed by a penalty, for a 14-10 lead.

But from the restart, with five minutes left, Heworth gained possession and, after a few tackles, Joe Raddings burst through the middle to score an impressive try, which was converted by Rawsthorne.

Heworth’s men of the match were Cameron Simpson and Lewis Hartley, and the top tackler was Tom Mannix.

York Acorn U15s came from behind to beat Norman-ton 24-20 in a superb game of big hits and good handling.

Strong defence and good carries were undone as Normanton, who have come down a division in a league restructure, went 10-0 ahead.

Reece Arthur crashed over but the hosts moved 16-6 up and, although Jake Calam weaved through, Normanton again stretched their lead to 20-12 after the break.

Fancy footwork and a try by Henry Andrews brought Acorn back into it. Then, with five minutes left, Jacob Walker made a break and, from a quick play-the-ball, Reef Wilson fought off defenders for the winner.

Calam booted four goals – these extras proving the difference.

Jimmy Hardwick was outstanding in the halves alongside Calam, Ben Limbert put in a huge performance on his return from a broken nose, Calam McDarby stood out, and Zac Baker was man of the match.

Jack Smith scored four tries and Harry Radcliffe three to help Heworth U14s to a 44-10 derby victory over New Earswick U14s.

Both teams started with equal determination but eventually Smith broke the deadlock. Alex Thomas also crossed for the Villagers, with captain Jacob Sunderland (5) and Radcliffe adding goals.

... as Morrison also gets first Heworth treble

Man-of-the-match Jamie Morrison scored his first-ever hat-trick as Heworth ARLC Under-12s produced a team performance to be proud of in a 54-16 win over Churwell Chiefs.

Fantastic rugby league reaped 11 tries to avenge defeat in the same fixtures last year – the Villagers’ only home loss in 18 months.

The Villagers led 24-6 at the interval with tries by Morrison (2), Lester Massey, after great passing, Sam Young, after a great delayed pass from Shay North, and Tom Kilgar.

The second half brought tries for Morrison, Harry Sheppeard, Jake Wright, both from kick returns, Kilgar and Zack Wilson (2).

Captain Cain North, Henri Grimbley also shone.
