TWO men have been arrested in connection with the suspected theft of drain covers in the area.

The men, aged 21 from Knottingley and 24, from Little Heck, were arrested in Kellington on Tuesday, September 20, after being spotted taking a drain cover from the side of the road and loading it onto a pony and trap.

North Yorkshire Police questioned the men and released the 24-year-old with a caution.

A police spokesman said no further action was taken against the 21-year old, but said any arrests would send out a strong message to metal thieves in the area.

Sergeant Mike Pickersgill, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “There has been a recent trend developing that has seen people stealing drain covers and grates from the side of the road. This is not only illegal but also leaves large gaps in the road which is a danger to road users.

“Obviously metal theft is a concern but putting a stop to it is a priority in Selby district and anyone coming into the area with the intention of stealing metal should be mindful that we are on the lookout for them.”

Last month, a spokesman for CTC, the national cyclists association, said thieves had put the lives of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at risk by stealing drain covers in the Burn, Gateforth and Fairburn areas, and police advised residents to be on the lookout for people who may be using official-looking signs to mask the thefts.
