A CYCLING paramedic service in a North Yorkshire town is to be axed after a four-month pilot scheme.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it will not be making the trail scheme in Harrogate permanent because the results were inconsistent, but have also confirmed that such response units in York will continue.

Mark Inman, the service’s acting head of operations, said the specially-equipped mountain bikes used by paramedics, which cost £5,000, would still be used for events such as the Great Yorkshire Show, but keeping them operational on a daily basis was not sustainable.

The Lifecycle service was introduced in York ten years ago, and its first year saw cycle paramedics cover more than 4,600 miles and respond to 860 emergency calls in the city centre.
