THESE students at Easingwold School were among those who took part in the recent prize giving evening.

The guest of honour at the ceremony this year was Kenyan-born Valentine Nkoyo, who spoke warmly of the time she had spent in York.

She said: “Culturally speaking, I could say that I am half Maasai, half Kenyan and – because of the time I have spent here – approximately ten per cent Yorkshire lass.”

Prize-winning students and guests at the ceremony heard Miss Nkoyo, winner of the 2011 British Council Shine! International Student of the Year Award for the Yorkshire and Humberside region, speak about the challenges she had faced to receive an education in Kenya, and her good fortune in having the opportunity to attend universities in both in Kenya and in England.

Those attending the event also heard a report on the year given by head teacher Carey Chidwick.

She was assisted by deputy head boy Alex Frusher and deputy head girl Rebecca Dutton.
