DOZENS of volunteers are to be trained in York to help the city cope with heavy snow.
About 50 people have signed up for the city council’s “snow warden” scheme, and training will begin this weekend.
Volunteers will help keep cul-de-sacs and minor side street clear of snow. They will be given a shovel, high-visibility coat, gloves and safety training. It is planned that one-tonne bags of salt will also be put at their disposal, in addition to the salt bins on streets.
The idea for the snow wardens originated in Calgary, Canada, where a group known as Snow Angels helped other more vulnerable members of the community in severe weather.
