HIGHWAYS chiefs are helping to investigate the accident at a York roundabout in which a lorry overturned, crushing a car.

Several motorists contacted The Press yesterday to call for a redesign of the A64 Hopgrove roundabout, where a mother and daughter inside the crushed Peugeot 107 amazingly survived Monday’s accident with cuts and bruises.

There was an almost identical accident less than two years ago at the same location, in which a fully-laden articulated lorry landed on a Land Rover. The family inside also escaped without serious injury.

The roundabout had just undergone a multi-million pound upgrade to ease traffic flows and improve safety prior to that accident.

Adrian Ward, of Strensall, told The Press yesterday while people had miraculously survived two overturned lorries, he feared such an accident would happen again with much more serious consequences.

John Bibby, of Heworth, said he had been in correspondence with the authorities since the roundabout was re-engineered.

“As a regular user, it seems very dangerously designed,” he said. “Traffic is encouraged to go very fast round big curves which go misleadingly first one way and then the other.”

Dave Ward, of York, said he had witnessed the aftermath of both the 2009 and this week’s accident, and also a third incident in which a lorry rolled over without landing on a car.

“Both my wife and I always drive in the right hand lane coming from Malton after seeing the 2009 incident,” he said. “This could be a very expensive roundabout that needs digging up.”

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said: “The safety of all road users is a priority for the Highways Agency and we are currently working with the police and other agencies to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

“Until these investigations are concluded, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”
