POLICE have tonight arrested a 24-year-old man who stood on the edge of a bridge over the A1 in North Yorkshire, forcing the route to be closed.
The alarm was raised at about 7.30pm when the man was seen standing outside the bridge's barriers on a stretch of the road near Catterick Garrison, threatening to harm himself.
The A1 was closed in both directions just after 8pm as police negotiators tried to talk the man to safety. After a stand-off lasting about 90 minutes, the man ran off into nearby woodland and was arrested.
North Yorkshire Police said he is from the local area and is tonight in custody. The road was reopened shortly after the arrest was made.
