FOUR men have been charged with a supermarket robbery which sparked an 80-mile police chase.

Securicor staff were robbed as they filled a cash machine at a Tesco store in Consett, County Durham, on Thursday afternoon.

They left the scene in a Honda Civic, which was later found burnt out nearby, and officers from Durham and North Yorkshire Police then chased a black BMW 520 through the north-east to York.

Its occupants were arrested after the car crashed in Malton Way, Rawcliffe, at about 4.10pm on Thursday. Durham Police said the men, aged 18, 28, 29 and 34 and all from the Leeds area, had last night been charged with robbery, arson and possession of an offensive weapon.

The 29-year-old has also been charged with dangerous driving. All four have been remanded in custody and were due to appear before magistrates in Peterlee this morning.
