PARKING will remain free at council car parks in Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet, Selby District Council has announced.
The council’s executive board passed a 20 per cent increase in parking charges at a meeting earlier this month, but the decision will not apply to Tadcaster or Sherburn in Elmet.
The news means that the Central car park in Tadcaster, which has 154 spaces, and the 94-space Britannia car park, near the bus station, will both remain free.
Councillor Richard Sweeting, of Tadcaster East, said: “There has always been free parking at this site and I think this will encourage shoppers into the town more and support our local economy.”
The council passed the rise in parking charges, which is the first in three years, to help raise an extra £60,000 income.
