I note that Coun Julie Gunnell is preparing a report for cabinet regarding the Union Terrace Car Park (Car Park sale stalls, July 11).

She mentions that York St John’s are working with the council to find solutions She makes no mention of seeking the views of residents, the Gillygate surgery, the Salvation Army, the sports and social clubs in the area, theatre-goers, the Minster, the coach tour operators, the retail strategy group, the FSB or local businesses, all of whom will be adversely affected by closure of the car park.

Only seeking the views of the one organisation that wants to close it, the one organisation that will benefit from it, seems rather partial.

She hasn’t even bothered to survey businesses about how many jobs will be lost by the closure.

Perhaps in this new democracy some jobs are more equal than other jobs.

In the York Labour Party manifesto a great deal was made of the fact that a Labour council would be a council of fairness. It would listen to people’s views and not ignore them like the previous administration.

This doesn’t look like a great start, but it’s not too late to carry out a thorough, open-minded inquiry. Please revisit your manifesto, councillor, before the ink dries.
