How can the new Labour executive be so out of touch with voters’ opinions?

The newly appointed council leader, James Alexander, reminds me of Gordon Brown in the early days of New Labour.

York does not have gold reserves to flog off to waste on pointless expenditure, so he chooses a very important and strategic car park instead.

I do not believe York needs more students, as we have two universities already and we have agreed a 40 per cent increase in the University of York campus recently.

This is against a background of vastly increased tuition fees, to £9,000 per year, which could reduce student numbers in the future. Also, more students mean more student houses with problems for neighbours, etc, and student lets do not pay council tax so council revenue is lost.

This proposal would decimate further Gillygate shopping and cafés, etc, and is opposed by everyone, residents and businesses alike.

How can Labour ignore public opinion and conveniently shelve this plan for now only to revive it later?
