YORK’S greens giant Simon Dyson was bidding to get off to a flier as one of the earlier starters in The Open Championship at Royal St George’s today, writes Tony Kelly.

The world-ranked number 74 went through his only practice round yesterday ahead of the 140th Championships which began this morning at the Kent-based course and where American Jerry Kelly had the honour of hitting the first tee shot.

That same opening shot distinction was sampled by Dyson six years ago at St Andrews, where he also posted his best ever Open finish of 34th place in his so far seven attempts.
