COMMERCIAL drivers across Selby have been praised by police, after an operation to check vehicles were being operated with appropriate licensing and insurance.

Police stopped 244 drivers during the operation, which ran between April 1 and June 30, and only three were reported for not having the appropriate insurance.

Officers also issued 29 fixed penalties for offences including drivers who used mobile phones while driving, did not wear seatbelts, or did not have a valid MoT certificate.

Two scrap metal collectors were found not to have the correct licence and were reported for the offence.

Three drivers were arrested during the operation, one who was over the proscribed alcohol limit, one for theft and the third for failing to attend court.

Inspector Richard Abbott, of Selby Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The operation has been a great success. It has demonstrated that the vast majority of commercial vehicle drivers are law abiding and have the correct documentation.”
