THE current vice-chancellor of the University of York has paid his respects to Lord Harewood, the Queen’s cousin, who died this week.

Lord Harewood, who died at his family home Harewood House on Monday, aged 88, was the university’s first chancellor in 1963, and held the position until 1967.

A statement from the university said staff at the facility were “greatly saddened by the news”.

Professor Brian Cantor, the current vice-chancellor, said: “Lord Harewood will always be fondly remembered as the University’s first Chancellor. His wise counsel helped to steer the University through its formative years in the 1960s. Lord Harewood continued to be one of our most devoted friends and supporters and he will be much missed.”

Books of condolence are to be opened at the stately home and the church in its grounds, near Leeds, and a celebration of Lord Harewood’s life is expected to be held later this year.
