A FORMER brewery worker and resident of a North Yorkshire residential home will celebrate his 100th birthday today with a walk down Memory Lane.

Donald Buckingham, who was born in Aldwark, will celebrate the milestone birthday today, surrounded by friends, staff, and with a visit from local dignitaries.

Jeanette Godliman, assistant home care manager for North Yorkshire County Council who manages the carers at the Popple Well Springs residential home, in Tadcaster, said: “Donald has been here since the move from the Beeches residential home, which closed recently, but has settled right in. He still gets out with the staff to visit the dray horses whenever he can.”

Donald, who was in the army during the Second World War, and spent some time in a prisoner of war camp, worked for both Sam Smith’s and John Smith’s breweries in Tadcaster in his youth, looking after the horses. Staff and residents at the 51-flat retirement community organised a party.
