COUNCIL bosses say a new waste collection system which will come into force in York next week is set to save £313,000 a year.

More than 1,450 households will be asked to change their collection day or week by City of York Council in a move which the authority hopes will also cut emissions produced by its refuse vehicles.

The revised schedules are being brought in from next Monday because less waste for landfill is being produced and more recycling and reusing is taking place.

Residents who are expected to be affected by changes in collection times will be notified in writing.

Because of the new arrangements, the times when waste is collected may change across the city, but all rubbish must still be left out before 7am in the usual place on the day of collection.

“I am delighted we are making these changes and it recognises that residents in York are really working hard at recycling,” said Coun Janet Looker, cabinet member for environmental services.

“Giving the crews more efficient routes mean they will use less fuel and cause less pollution, so this is a real added bonus.”
