A PRIMARY school in York which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year has had a fitting birthday present from Ofsted.

With 320 pupils, Lakeside School, in Clifton Moor, is entering its second decade with a “good” rating from Government inspectors who visited the school last month.

The team of three inspectors found that standards in maths particularly had improved due to effective methods of teaching, and results were also up since the last inspection.

Brenda Clarke, lead inspector, said in her report: “This is a good school. The good care, guidance and support, greatly appreciated by parents and carers, ensure that pupils feel safe. Pupils’ enjoyment of school is good and one pupil mirrored others’ views when saying, ‘Lakeside School is a great place to be.’ “Pupils particularly appreciate the good curriculum that includes many exciting clubs and enriching visits. They have a good understanding of healthy lifestyles.

“Their behaviour is good in lessons and around the school and contributes significantly to their learning.

“The school is highly regarded in the local community and has developed effective links with other countries. However, pupils have limited understanding of cultural diversity in Britain.”

She went on to say: “Good quality teaching and learning overall contribute significantly to pupils’ good progress.

“All teachers manage behaviour very effectively so that lessons run smoothly. They have good subject knowledge and plan interesting, relevant lessons that grab pupils’ attention.”

Inspectors also found two areas where they thought the school could improve: making sure that all pupils are taught consistently well, particularly in the early years foundation stage; and that staff provide opportunities for pupils to meet children from other cultures and faiths.

Ros Latham, head teacher, said: “I am very pleased with this report, which recognises the commitment and energy shown by the staff right across the school. I am proud of the children, whose behaviour, enthusiasm and progress were praised by the inspectors.”

Dave Kirby, chairman of governors, said: “This excellent result reflects the total dedication of the leadership team and all the Lakeside staff.

“They are constantly working to ensure that children not only achieve academically, but have every possible opportunity to develop socially, creatively and personally. Lakeside never stands still.”
