FANS crowded into a York department store to meet iconic singer Lulu.

The diminutive star, who has been a household name for 47 years, visited Fenwick to promote her skin care range, Time Bomb, which has not been stocked in York before.

Lulu, 62, chatted to fans who queued to meet her.

“Everything I do is to support the fact that I am a singer and you learn very quickly in the music business that it’s all about youth. Whether you are interested in appearance or not you really have to give it attention,” she said about her skincare regime.

“It’s beautiful to be in York. I like the buildings here, they are fabulous.”

Ann Brown, 65, of Fulford, said: “I came to see her because I think she is amazing. She is a similar age to me and I have grown up with her. I think she is a really good role model and gives the older generation something to aim for – you don’t have to dress in a dowdy or old style, you can look glamorous and smart.”

Jacqueline Skelton, 53, of Clifton Moor, said: “I have liked Lulu ever since the 1960s. I think she is really vivacious and fun-loving and I wanted to see her in the flesh”.

Lulu shot to fame at the age of 15 when Shout hit the charts. She went on to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest, sang with Take That and, more recently, mentored contestants in American Idol and performed in Let’s Dance for Comic Relief.

Her appearance was rescheduled after Lulu cancelled her planned visit in June due to illness.
