AN inquest into the death of an “exceptional” North Yorkshire doctor, who died after going missing from his home, has been opened and adjourned.

Dr Andrew Stanford, from Riccall, near Selby, had worked at the Posterngate surgery in the town for 27 years, before he retired in 2004.

Dr Stanford, aged 67, went missing from his home on Wednesday, June 6, and his body was found by police officers in nearby outbuildings on Thursday after extensive searches in and around the Riccall area.

Jacqueline Roe, practice manager, told The Press last week that the surgery had been shocked and saddened by the news, and that Dr Stanford was: “an exceptional person and doctor and a gentleman in every sense of the word.

“He cared for all his patients and was a very compassionate, loving and caring man.”

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said an inquest into the death of the father-of-three had been opened and closed yesterday, and confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounded the doctor’s death. Dr Stanford is survived by his widow, Margaret, and their three children.
