A ROOFER in York is warning householders to be on the lookout after a spate of lead thefts in Clifton.

Chris Garnett of Roofs Above, a family firm, based at Clifton Moor in York, said the price of lead at about £1 a kilo is making it increasingly attractive to thieves.

He said in recent weeks they have been called out to make repairs after a number of lead thefts in the Burton Stone Lane area of Clifton.

He said: “In one day the lead was stripped from seven porches in a row of flats on Burton Stone Lane and at the minute we are working on a hairdresser’s where their lead has been taken.

“It’s a real problem and I think homeowners should be encouraged to cash in on the lead themselves before the thieves get the chance to.”

Mr Garnett, whose firm installs fibre-glass flat roofing, said their business has been in operation since 2003 and said the problem is the worst he can remember it.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said domestic lead theft is a growing problem in York and North Yorkshire. She said: “The increasing price of lead has made it a valuable commodity which is making it attractive to thieves.

“They are selling it to scrap dealers and making money depending on the weight and the quality of the metal.

“It is important to ensure that all your buildings are protected from lead thieves, as if any stolen lead goes undetected it can result in water damage which can cost even more to put right than replacing the lead.

“As well as being vigilant and keeping an eye out for any suspicious behaviour, residents should consider some simple crime prevention advice; if possible fit CCTV and coat your lead in a theft deterrent product.

“Also think about replacing lead with an alternative material and trade it in at a scrap merchants yourself before it gets stolen.”

Anyone who has any information about the theft of lead in their area is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
