THE focus is firmly on promotion and relegation issues as the IT Sports Mixed Doubles Tennis League season enters its final weeks.

The division one title race is wide open, with current holders Dunnington heading the table after a win at York 2.

A vital 11-1 win by York’s Angus Smith and Kathryn Maude kept their side in second place after they edged a close match at Castlegarth.

They are just ahead of Fulford on a games difference of seven. Fulford beat their second string.

Previous winners Poppleton are still in with a shout after beating Rufforth.

Division two will go down to the last week again as last week’s leaders, Dunnington, held on to top spot with a win against Fulford.

The pack behind them all changed places as Wigginton moved into the second spot, inspired by Ian Tooms and Denise Crane in their match against relegation-threatened Wheldake.

Unbeaten Jez Catchpole and Denise Wilson kept York in the frame, just behind rivals Bubwith, who were pushed all the way by Fulford.

Division three title favourites Stamford Bridge continued their unbeaten run at the expense of Wigginton, with Anthony Downing and Natalie Muir winning 32 games.

Bishopthorpe lost the opportunity to confirm their promotion as they lost to Wigginton by two games.

Division four has split into two, with David Lloyd having one hand on the silverware after a win against Riccall.

They are just ahead of Appleton Roebuck, who beat bottom of the table Stillington thanks to Paul Kaye and Judy Marriott.

York slipped down to fourth after narrow losses against Fulford and Wilberfoss.

Three wins by Dunnington have installed them as division five title favourites. They beat Heworth, Rowntree Park and promotion rivals Poppleton.

Dunnington need only two more points to clinch promotion from division seven after wins against Wistow and Fulford.

Unbeaten Adrian Hitchenor and Peggy Hodgson moved Sutton-on-Derwent closer to the division eight title with a win at Appleton Roebuck.

Stamford Bridge head the division nine title race after a comfortable win at Fulford.

They are ahead of Riccall, who had a tougher match against Rufforth before John Lintott and Rachel Clark hit form to take the points at Cliffe.

Glenn Melia and Helen Gray won 28 games for Heworth in a losing cause against Cliffe.

Three teams are now vying for the two promotion spots in division 11 after Appleton Roebuck sprang a surprise by beating leaders Bubwith, who could not deal with Tom Halliday and Julia Campbell.

Poppleton are hot on their heels after a win at Rufforth, while Kelvin Riches and Alison Ward ensured Bishopthorpe will have a say in the final outcome after a win over Rufforth.
