WAVES of horrible history surrounding York’s rivers are to be brought back to life as the city stages a celebration of its waterways.
City of York Council’s sixth annual Festival Of The Rivers begins this Saturday, offering a string of family events on the Ouse and Foss and an array of riverbank entertainment.
Characters from the darkest corners of York’s past will also be playing their part courtesy of York Dungeon, which is telling the tale of how the rivers became a haven for everybody from Romans to Vikings.
The shows will explain how the rivers secured York’s status as a main trade route, but then became the city’s worst enemy as the Black Death spread across Europe.
Helen Douglas, the Dungeon’s general manager, said: “The festival will be a great addition to the city for both residents and visitors and we are realty excited to be spreading the story with our shows,” said the Dungeon’s general manager Performances will run this weekend and on the weekends of July 16/17 and 23/24 at noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.
