Fence built through middle of York play area's goalposts

FOOTBALLERS using a pitch in York are being faced with a de-fence-ive headache – after workmen built a barrier through their goal.

A new £6,000 steel structure has been installed along the side of land used for kickabouts next to the play area on Stray Road in Heworth, but it runs straight through some goalposts.

The posts now stand either side of the fence and City of York Council has apologised for the “own goal”.

One parent who uses the play area, who did not want to be named, said: “The fence cutting through the goalpost looks ridiculous, and the first thing you think when you see it is that it’s a joke or somebody must have had a bad day at the office. It’s difficult to see why it’s been done that way and I hope it’s sorted out soon, because it must be a disappointment for children using the playing field.”

Heworth Without Parish Council, which is responsible for the play area, has secured £43,000 of funding through the city council via the Playbuilder scheme and this will be used to improve and modernise play facilities in the park. The goalposts are to be moved so they stand in a different direction.

Dave Meigh, the city council’s head of parks and open spaces, said: “The new fencing was installed, at a cost of about £6,000, ahead of the £37,000 investment in new equipment, which is due in the next few weeks.

“We recognise that failure to relocate the goalposts is a real own goal and we have asked the contractors to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency. We can only apologise for the error.”

Parish council clerk Malcolm Sunderland said the new fence would create space for the play area to be extended.

He said: “The goalposts are to be moved the other way round from their current position so we can have a better play area.

“It is not a problem, but we are just waiting for this to be done. We are meeting the contractors this week about the installation of the new equipment, which will include things like wire and rope facilities.

“This equipment is what local people have chosen and it should be a welcome addition for the children who play there.”

I only have one thing to ask. What on earth was the numpty who put up the posts thinking? Did it not cross his/her mind that they should check whether or not to take the goal posts down, prior to erecting the fence?

What wonderfully inaccurate reporting. Firstly there is no such stray as heworth Stray mentioned in the headline. The Stray in Heworth is Monk stray. Secondly the land in question is not part of Monk Stray it is the play area next to Tang Hall Beck close to Heworth Without Community Centre I believe. There is really no excuse for a "Local" Paper getting such details so badly wrong especially as they must have been to the site to get the picture.

If I were you Dave, I'd get down there with a hacksaw this morning, before the TV crews arrive. Otherwise you're going to be the "And finally..." item on all the evening news programmes.

Funny - for a council which usually keeps moving the goal posts. I'd be surprised if it's a level playing field.

Nah the TV crowd will also be from Leeds so they’ll go to the wrong place. Last year when a rugby union player was seriously injured playing for the Railway Institute the TV crowd spent hours outside the rugby league ground at Monks Cross in Huntington. Let’s face it York is a suburb of Leeds now as far as the local media are concerned.

I am no lover or defender of YCC, but the spokesman did say "the Contractor" ie, private contractout, not public service employees. I suppose the council could be guilty of failing to filter out the numpty contractors, after all, the lowest tender isn't usually the best.

We should have the contractors name so no one else has the misfortune to ever use them for any work, if their total brain power couldn't span beyond the goal posts.!!

However the contractor is paid to do a job. I am sure the contractor will probably have had just as many stupid requests that building a fence through some goal posts wouldn't even register. The boundary will have been set. It is whoever told them to put it there before moving the Football pitch that is to blame in this.

Yes it is common land that dates way back to the Freemasons of York and you can still graze cattle. They are open land for the benefit and enjoyment for the citizens of York for all time.

Oh dear tiger lady how wrong you are. First of all the stray's are subject to enclosure acts for the benefit of the Freemen of York (not freemasons as you state). The enclosure acts shows that they are not common lands but private lands held for the exclusive benefit of the Freemen of the ancient ward for that particular Stray. That the Freemen's strays council (on which I serve and have done for quite a number of years now) and the city council, who manage the strays on behalf of the Freemen allow free access to those areas of the strays not still used for grazing or leased to golf courses (as with part of Monk Stray) or that are used as allotments, does not make them common Land. They are not nor can they ever be common land. Sorry but you are mistaken in believing otherwise.
That said the fact also remains that the headline for this article is misleading as the field on wich this fence has been erected is not part of any of the Stray lands of York.

Thank you for enlightening me.I meant Freemen not Freemason so apologies for that,my mistake. I was under the belief that all strays were common land for the Citizens of York.Oh well, you learn something new every day.

The idiot who did this should be sacked and if it was a contractor who did it the Council should ensure the company he worked for are given no more projects in the future.

There are plenty of people and contractors looking for work - lets give the work to those people who have a higher iq than a worm!

Doesn't the report say Stray Road and nothing about Heworth/Monk Stray? Stray Road is the name of the road that the park is on, that changes into Applecroft Road mid-way down, so there doesn't seem to be an error here.

Funny how this Council can easily waste £6,000 of taxpayers money yet when you go to them with a money making reuse scheme which would benefit the local economy, would cut down on the things that go into landfill and probably save us a litt...le on our council tax, they just don't want to know. Also York council would be better run if all the cronies who work there didn't just get there entire family shoe in jobs, its a bloody disgrace and this really needs exposing.
