A GROUP of campaigners opposed to Government “cuts and privatisations” has set up a protest camp in York’s Library Square.

The group arrived yesterday and said it intends to stage a three night sit-in, which will include a speakers’ corner session today, from 5pm.

The protesters are also inviting the public to take part, and said a Library Square Declaration would be created tomorrow.

A spokesman for the group said: “The location of the camp has been chosen because of its proximity to two vital services; the Explore Centre and the council’s housing office.

“It’s hoped that users of both will stop and share their concerns and experiences, while campers are clear they wish to defend and not obstruct both.”

The protesters said the aim of the camp was to spark debate on Government policy at a time of “widening inequality, increasing unemployment and attacks on education and health care”.
