THE man in charge of Britain’s coastguard service has told a committee of MPs that plans which include reducing the opening hours of Bridlington’s coastguard station will improve the “resilience and effectiveness” of the UK’s sea rescue service.

Maritme Operations Centres chief executive Vice-Admiral Sir Alan Massey was giving evidence about the proposals to cut the number of 24-hour coastguard stations to three and turn the Bridlington centre into one of five nationwide that are open during daylight hours only.

Shipping minister Mike Penning said the proposals were not “fixed in stone”.
