I AM getting increasing frustrated by the children and teenagers who appear to be using the grass area on Tedder Road as a social gathering point.

I encourage children to take advantage of facilities that are provided, but they must be used appropriately.

I am sick of seeing kids climbing and damaging the trees that have been planted, the graffiti, the footballs damaging the cars and, most of all, the disgusting language.

I can also say it won’t be long before a child is seriously hurt as nearly every night I am swerving and dodging them as they run out on to the road. Parents, get a grip.

• IT’S A bit much when you have to contemplate putting on body armour just to walk to the shops in Dringhouses.

Recently, I was set on by three youths who clearly thought it a joke to harass me.

On another occasion, I was nearly mowed down by a youth who was riding his cycle on the footpath.

In all these incidents, profanity was also hurled at me.

Why should we tolerate this abusive behaviour from this immoral generation, many of whom are disrespectful of their elders and society? Lawlessness is a way of life to them.

I certainly agree it is time we brought back National Service for this age group. It doesn’t necessarily mean Army training, but a broad spectrum of disciplines.

An example could be working inside hospital casualty wards, which might kick-start some of these kids into realising how lucky they are to enjoy good health.

What must happen, however, is action to curb this increasing violence and recklessness, because otherwise the future is to see yet another generation spiralling into lifelong crime and the inevitable jail terms that go with it. Phil Shepherdson, Chantry Close, Woodthorpe, York.
