CHECKS are being carried out to ensure the right York residents are receiving discounts on their council tax bills.

City of York Council is reviewing its database as it aims to find out whether people are still entitled to a single occupancy discount due to them living alone.

The authority has asked anybody who was previously eligible for the reduced rate but whose circumstances have now changed to contact them as it carries out the residency check.

“We know most people claim council tax discounts legitimately, but there are occasions when people’s circumstances change and they forget to tell us their discount should be cancelled,” said Ian Floyd, the council’s director of resources.

“The authority has a legal and social responsibility to ensure everybody in York gets value for money and to ensure only those people who are eligible receive the discount“

Residents wanting to cancel their discount can do so by phoning the council on 01904 551558 or emailing council.tax@york.gov.uk.
